Hi friend!
The Pollening has lessened, freeing us from the insistent sneezing and sniffles. The False Summer has come and gone. It feels like we can finally get down to experiment on new avenues that didn’t seem possible before.
Here’s what to expect from this newsletter:
Free.99 resources from GDC 2024 and #notGDC 2024 that inspired us
A new study group for Blender learners
Upcoming playtest nights and other community events
Recap of the April events
…and, a fan favorite, coworking shenanigans
SPOTLIGHT: Free.99 Inspiring Resources
As indies, we need to be precious with our time and resources. Not all of us can attend game developer conferences all over the world, take on expensive degree programs, or both. So, we curated a short list of free resources that inspired us. We hope they inspire you too!
#notGDC 2024 content (notgdc.io)
How to think about history in your games
Behaviour Trees versus State Machines
2D Toon Shading for VFX Flipbooks
Exiting pre-production before the game is good enough
Automate the boring parts
GDC 2024’s free content (gdcvault.com or GDC YouTube Channel)

April Events Recap
April 11th: Student Interactive Media Showcase
The Student Interactive Media Showcase was amazing! Students from William Peace, Wake Tech, and NC State really showed out their final projects. I personally had fun just listening to the students’ passion for their projects and what they had learned. I’m glad they had the chance to show the community what they’re made of!
April 19th: Playtest Night + Most Valuable Production Talk
First of all, wow! So many folks turned up and out for this event. Many folks got to face their fears with NOPE Challenge, spell some words, and even get into the rhythm of wonderfully designed platformers. Heather, our speaker for the night, showed us how we can make production less intimidating for teams and solo devs.
Coworking Highlights
The past month has been a lot of achieving milestones in members’ projects. So much celebration in the #share-your-stuff channel. Shoutout to:
Joshitha for her work on the spelling game project for a client! I’ve played it, and it brought me back to those browser games you played in school.
Armand for consistently pushing his fighting game prototype forward. He even showcased the latest build at the April playtest night!
Matthew on publishing his game, You Donut Get It, on Itch!
And what better way to celebrate these milestones than a board game night? Multiple sessions of Love Letter hosted by Ryan tested members’ memory, tolerance for risk, and desperation to be the last one standing. But they still were friends in the end, right?
Right?
